Exodus 4

  1. While Moses brings up some legit points about people not believing him and such, it also feels to me in a way that he was trying to find a way no to do it. I mean God is like this is what I want you to do and I will be with you making it happen. Moses is all they won't believe me and I don't talk good. We have to believe that if God has called us to do something He will equip us to do it! It's easy to get in the flesh and make excuses not to do what God has told you but doing things through faith that He asks you to is so much more rewarding.
  2. Running away when the staff turned into a snake is a natural response. God tested Moses's faith though by having him grab it by the tail. If you ever dealt with snakes you know you want to get control over the head so it can't bite you.
  3. It irritated God a little bit that Moses didn't have the faith to trust God completely to equip him to do what he was called to do, but He meet him where he was. Allowing Moses's brother Aaron to speak for him.
  4. Verses 24-26 had me confused for a moment cause they seemed out of place. Reading the study notes it made more sense. While God was remembering the covenant and fulfilling it, His people had to remember and follow the conditions of it also. One condition was that the sons needed to be circumcised. Moses's son was not so the Lord was going to have to kill him. Moses's wife I believe being lead by God, preformed a circumcision on him. The reason I believe she was lead by God is I don't think he wanted to really kill the boy but He had to keep His word and follow the covenant. I believe God doesn't want any to parish which is why He give us multiple chances for us to follow Him. Also that's why He meets you were you are and forgives all, so there are no excuses of why you can't be saved.
  5. Chapter 4 ends with the Israelites worshiping God because they believed He would save them. They weren't out of the situation yet, but worshipped anyways. We need to worship God in the middle of our circumstances knowing that He is a faithful God that will get us through anything that comes against us.

Exodus 3

  1. Trying to put myself in Moses's sandals for a moment here I am just caring for a flock, minding my own business when a bush out of no where catches fire and isn't being consumed. I think most would freak out a little. Not sure my first action would be lets go check out this flaming bush. Moses was apparently a very curious person. Perhaps maybe because it was God the bush seemed peaceful. Moses does fear when it starts talking and he knows it's God.
  2. Verse 11 "But Moses said to God, 'Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?' 12 He said,'But I will be with you,..." It's not about you and your qualifications, it's all about who called you and who is with you!
  3. God said His name was "I AM WHO I AM, the LORD (Yahweh in some translations) the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." The first part of that for me is like He is saying I Am the only God and am God of everything. Then He goes on to say He is the God of those known to have died on earth, yet He says "I am the God of ____" meaning while those persons may have died on earth they must be alive somewhere else.
  4. God telling Moses to go tell the king of Egypt to let all the slaves go seems like a crazy request. But He wasn't having Moses go by himself and no I am not talking about the elders of Israel. The Pharaoh would have laughed at them. No God was going with them and showing just a small portion of His power. Cause again it's not about the person but who is with the person.
  5. Finally not only was God freeing His people from slavery but He was going to give them the spoils of victory. Not by force even just by having the Hebrew women asking for stuff and the Egyptians would just be compelled to give it up. This shows it's not always about force.

Exodus 1 & 2

  1. Chapter 1 starts out telling how the people of Israel(Jacob's descendants) were fruitful and multiplied into a very large group in Egypt. This goes with God's command in Genesis and promise He gave Abraham, Isaac & Jacob.
  2. The Israelites had been living peacefully. However, a new king came to power, that wasn't informed of the past and how Joesph saved Egypt, so he only saw a large group and feared that they would try to take over.  Because of that fear he enslaved the people and when that wasn't enough he ordered all the sons born to be killed.
  3. The midwives Shiphrah and Puah I would say must have either seen God do something or heard the stories of the past that they feared Him more than the Pharaoh. They lied and disobeyed the Pharaoh's order, which God blessed them for doing by giving them families. On a side note, I find it interesting that the writer names the midwives but doesn't bother to say the Pharaoh's name.
  4. Moses's parents were Levites, which is the tribe that the priests come from later on.
  5. All sons born were to be thrown into the Nile. Moses's mom hid him for 3 months before she ended up putting him in a basket into the Nile. Knowing from personal experience with babies that she was able to hid him for 3 months is pretty impressive.
  6. I love how of all the people that could have found him God had Pharaoh's daughter find him. Then unknowingly she ends up paying his own mom to nurse him. Talk about God making a way.
  7. I believe there is significance in the fact God uses certain numbers/amounts of time repeatedly. From research I have found that people say that the number 40 is in the Bible 146 or 159 times. I didn't count myself, I might do it another day. The consensus though is that the number 40 is normally but not always associated with tests, trials, probation or judgment.
  8.  At age 40 Moses despite being raised as an Egyptian obviously knows he is Hebrew and stands up for a Hebrew that is being beaten. Moses ends up killing the Egyptian. God saves Moses life by having him flee.
  9. 40 years later God hears the cry of His people and remembers the covenant He made with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. When God says He remembers something it doesn't mean He had forgotten about it, it means that He is about to take action.
  10. Final notes for chapter 2 I found interesting. First is the fact that Moses ends up meeting his future wife at a well. A well was also involved with Isaac and Jacob finding their wives. I wonder if part of it is because a well is water and that symbolized life. Also I think it's significant that Moses's wife was the daughter of a priest.
